Lago Ypacaraí

Our experience & things to know

We had some work done on our Rouletout in Paraguay and had time to explore this lake and its surroundings. Lago Ypacaraí is a relatively big lake but unfortunately not with the best water quality. It is kiteable with northerly or southerly winds. We just kited on the western shore at the Yacht Club Ypacarai. The other launch areas are on the other side in San Bernardino.

You can also kite on the river Paraguay in Asuncion (near Costanera de Asunción) as well as on the lakes in the west and south of the country but we haven't done so ourselves.

Wind & conditions

Winds are weather dependent so check the local station in order to find out if it is kiteable. The lake is relatively shallow and water is flat.

Season

There is no real season as it strongly depends on local weather. The Yacht Club has a weather station on WeatherLink (search for Ypacarai) with live wind and weather data.

Where to stay

Well, San Bernardino has it all, lots of places to stay or you stay in Asuncion.

Crowds & infrastructure

No crowds, you need an invitation (or be member) in order to enter the Yacht Club which has all the infrastructure you need and a nice grassy launch area.

Access

As mentioned, the Yacht Club can only be entered on invitation or with a member. Try to ask friendly at the gate and I'm sure they find a solution. Access in San Bernardino is free.
