Roatan (Camp Bay)

Our experience & things to know

We had heard of kiting on Roatan somewhere in Mexico but actually never met someone who went there, so we decided to check it out. We were a bit early in the season and not so lucky with the winds, nevertheless we enjoyed it. Launching at Camp Bay is quite a challenge as there is not a lot of space and even when the winds are north easterly you might want to get support from the team for your first launches out between the trees. When the winds are easterly, Camp Bay is a bit under the wind from the island's hills. The solution is to go by boat to Santa Elena and ride there in the perfectly flat water. The trip as such is already worth it, through the mangroves and along the coast line and the team of Camp Bay Lodge makes it really a pleasant day. Pumping your kite, helping to launch you in the water and bringing you to a nice restaurant for lunch in a local village, only accessible by water. The winds are very smooth, except the one day we were able to ride westerly winds and the choice of riding inside or outside the reef give options for everyone with respect to the waves. Ground support is great and there is also a boat ready for you in case something goes wrong.

Wind & conditions

Wind season is from the end of December until August. However, the trade winds (north easterly) are most  and reliable from March until August. Occasional weather fronts mix up the winds in January / February when you may even ride with westerly winds. Inside the reef the water is pretty flat but you can easily ride out into the waves.

Season

The season runs from December to August with best winds from February to August.

Where to stay

It is quite a pain to bring your rig to Roatan. If you do, park at the public parking of Camp Bay Beach which is really beautiful. Alternatively stay at Camp Bay Lodge which is the kite base on the eastern side of Roatan.

Crowds & infrastructure

Roatan's west is very developed while the eastern tip kept its charm and typically there are just a handful of kiters around and there is plenty of space. Trips to other locations are organized by the lodge and are run with a small boat of maybe 10 kiters.

Access

Access is free but if you use the services of the lodge a daily fee might be charged. Kite trips were about USD 50 per day when we were there.
