Sisal

Our experience & things to know

We came straight from El Cuyo to Sisal. Sisal is just a good half an hour north west of Merida and a popular weekend destination for Mexicans. A charming small town with good restaurants, fishermen and everything you need. The kite beach starts right in the village towards the west up to the small port. The beach is huge, the waves are nice and the riding is very similar to El Cuyo. For those without a rig, there are plenty of guest houses to rent along the beach. The huge flocks of flamingos passing while you kite are just amazing and probably the "trademark" of Sisal.

Wind & conditions

Sisal requires north easterly winds for great side shore riding. The winds are supported by thermals, so the afternoons are typically stronger. Watch out for clouds and storms on the mainland as they impact the winds. You ride on the open sea so there are some waves.

Season

The season runs from November to July with the best winds from February to July.

Where to stay

You may park your rig close to the beach a bit further west of town. For those who like it more secluded, pass the small harbor and find a place on the endless beaches further west.

Crowds & infrastructure

There is a kite school in Sisal and you may rent gear. However, Sisal is not a very busy spot, so be prepared to ride by yourself.
